Of the many advances in the field of dentistry in the last 15 years or , one of the most exciting has been the introduction of a new orthodontic (teeth straightening) system, commonly referred to by the trade name “Invisalign”. This new system, available through orthodontists and many general dentists, alleviates some of the common problems of the old metal braces. It is a technology that will work for most, but not all, problems that require traditional braces.
For the purpose of the article, this technology will be referred to as “Invisalign”. The dental consumer should be aware, however, that other companies offer similar systems under different trade names. Currently Invisalign is the most recognizable of these systems.
Invisalign is a series of clear synthetic computer generated aligners that are prepared specifically for a patient, based on x-rays, photos and impressions taken by the dentist. These aligners are changed approximately every two weeks throughout the treatment process. The aligners gently and gradually move the teeth until the teeth are moved to the final prescribed position. Treatment with Invisalign general ranges from 12 to 18 months. Cost is comparable to traditional braces.
This technology offers many advantages to the patient. While it accomplishes the same result as traditional braces, it does so without many of the headaches. The aligners can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing, dental cleanings, and special occasions, although they should be worn for 22-24 hours a day. The aligners are clear, so they are virtually invisible .
While Invisalign is appropriate for the normal orthodontic problems, such as crowding, spacing, crossbite, overbite and underbite, there will be times when this technology will not be recommended by your dentist. It is important to trust the skill and knowledge of your dental provider in making this determination. The goal is always a happy patient with optimal results!
