The arrival of 2021 gives us all cause to celebrate and look ahead to a new year of optimism and hope. The COVID 19 vaccines are beginning to be distributed and, I believe, that each person vaccinated enhances our chances of putting this terrible virus behind us. Now it is important to be patient, keep the safety practices in place, and don’t get “sloppy”. Hopefully, we will see life get more normal in 2021.

The new year is the perfect time to examine our personal health practices. If nothing else, this pandemic has shown us the importance of avoiding co-morbidity issues, such as excessive weight, diabetes, and heart issues.

From a dental perspective, the virus has illustrated, once again, the correlation between oral health and overall health. The link between poor oral health and heart issues has been clearly established and is something that should concern any adult who has gum disease or decay in the mouth. Keeping this in mind, I’ll suggest a few “resolutions” for the new year.

First, look at your toothbrush. If is splayed, get a new one. If you have been sick, get a new one. And if you haven’t replaced it in a couple of months, get a new one! The tooth brush is your first line of defense in fighting oral infection.

Second, purchase and use an over-the-counter antiseptic mouth rinse, which will fight infections in the mouth. Do not confuse these mouth rinses with regular mouth wash. Your hygienist, dentist or pharmacist can guide you.

Finally, make a dental appointment. If you have stayed away because of the virus, I urge you to reconnect with your dental health team. I am extremely proud of my profession and the steps it has taken to ensure the safety of all involved – patients, team and doctors. Do not be afraid — be proactive. Improve your overall health by taking control of your oral health.

Sincerely,
